Our history
In the late 1990s there were State Board schools, ICSE schools and Convent schools as options to choose for education where the evaluation of a student was on his ability to be able to learn by rote. If the parents were quick enough, they would be able to secure a seat in the renowned institutions as admissions were limited. For families seeking a less traditional or innovative approach to schooling, the only viable options lay outside the state—or even abroad. This lack of options highlighted the pressing need for change. A more holistic approach to education, one that addressed the comprehensive development of students beyond rote learning, had become the need of the hour.
We began in the 1990s with a group of parents who strongly believed that education should be soul-enriching, child friendly, respecting the individuality of the child. They came across an exhibition on Waldorf education in the year 1996. Inspired by Rudolf Steiner's philosophy of education, they delved into it and after months of persistent explanation, deep discussion and careful consideration these committed individuals founded Tridha, the first Rudolf Steiner school in Mumbai, in the year 2000. This school is run by The Indian Education Revival Trust (IERT), which is committed to protecting their childhood, educating them in love and sending them forth in freedom.
Tridha over the years
Tridha was born in June 2000, with one kindergarten and Grade 1. Today, we have a student community of over 600+ Tridhans across a playgroup, eight mixed-age kindergartens, and from Grades 1 to 12.
Over the years, we have nurtured and grown two campuses. We have a city campus in Andheri East, Mumbai where students attend regular classes. We also have Terra - our off-site campus at Ghotavade village in Raigad district, two hours away from the city campus. At this “school away from school”, students enjoy outdoor blocks like farming and cultivate a oneness with nature.
In today’s evolving world, we prepare our students to succeed in any field they choose to pursue. They work towards completing examinations under the Cambridge Assessment International Education (CIE) system, with the freedom to choose their subjects. The Waldorf approach remains at the essence of their education.
Tridha is run by the Indian Education Revival Trust (IERT). The Trust bears legal responsibility for the school while also monitoring financial, academic and certain operational matters.
An evolving approach for an evolving world
At Tridha, we are deeply inspired by the work of Rudolf Steiner. While we do not associate with the Anthroposophical Society, we maintain strong bonds with other Waldorf schools by sharing our experiences, encouraging student exchanges and staying abreast with the progress of ideas in the global Steiner community.
We believe that Steiner’s ideas are to be evolved, not worshipped. The needs of our students rather than the constraints of an ideology are at the heart of our work.
